Jeffrey Sweet

Jeffrey Sweet writer, graduated from NYU with a BFA in film in 1971, Jeffrey is a prolific and award winning writer. His works have been produced on television and stage. His Hallmark Hall of Fame adaptation of Hugh Whitemore s play PACK OF LIES was Emmy nominated for best TV movie and best script and won the Peabody Award. He has written pilots for Norman Lear, the Charles Brothers/Paramount, Columbia Television, Hearst Entertainment and a teleplay, THE VALUE OF NAMES for HBO (production pending). His short film, ROUTED based on one-act broadcast on Showtime and A&E won numerous film festival awards. Among his plays are: BERLIN 45 (Jefferson Award recommended), IMMORAL IMPERATIVES (Nominated for the Joseph Jefferson (Jeff) award),THE ACTION AGAINST SOL SCHUMANN (Winner, American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) 2001 playwriting award), BLUFF (Nominated for the ATCA and Jeff awards), FLYOVERS (winner 1998 Joseph Jefferson Award for "new work," nominated for American Theatre Critics Association playwriting award - Scheduled for New York production),
THE FALCON S PITCH (adaptation of Shakespeare's HENRY VI), WITH AND WITHOUT (nominated for ATCA award), AMERICAN ENTERPRISE (nominated for Joseph Jefferson Award for best new play; recipient Kennedy Center-American Express Fund for New American Plays grant. Played limited run off-Broadway, directed by Patricia Birch, 1994; nominated for Outer Critics Circle Award, 1994), PORCH (winner, Society of Midland Authors Award).He collaborated on the musicals: I SENT A LETTER TO MY LOVE (written with Melissa Manchester) and WHAT ABOUT LUV?, featuring Nathan Lane Off-Broadway and which played successful engagements in London and Tokyo. He has authored articles for Newsday, L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, Variety, Chicago Magazine & American Theatre. His books include: Solving Your Script (playwriting text published in 2001 by Heinemann), The Dramatist's Toolkit (playwriting text published in 1993 by Heinemann; currently in sixth printing) and Something Wonderful Right Away -- oral history of Second City (1978, Avon; reprint by Limelight Editions).

Founder, N.Y. Writer's Bloc writing workshop; alumni include Donald Margulies (Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jane Anderson, Winnie Holtzmann, Anne Meara and Keith Gordon (film director). He served five years on Tony Award nominating committee and is a current Tony voter, member of Ensemble Studio Theatre, Alumnus of New Dramatists. Elected Member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild, (serving third term). Jeffrey also teaches playwriting all over the country and has done so for the MFA programs at the Actors Studio, Carnegie-Mellon University & Columbia.
