Howard Marren
Howard Marren s most recent work is the musical version of Jean Anouilh s THE WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS, entitled PARAMOUR, which he wrote with Joe Masteroff (book and lyrics). Starring Len Cariou and directed by Joe Hardy, it had its premier at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. PARAMOUR was given a staged reading at the Eugene O Neill Theater Center/National Music Theater Conference. Mr. Marren is the recipient of the Outer Critics Circle Award for the score of his off-Broadway musical LOVE, based on Murray Schisgal s play, LUV. Re-titled WHAT ABOUT LUV?, it was produced in London at the Orange Tree Theatre and, subsequently, the Lyric Hammersmith. Further productions ensued in Tokyo (1989, 1994, and again in 1996 after which it played Osaka and other Japanese cities), South Africa and Germany. WHAT ABOUT LUV? Was recorded in London by That s Entertainment Records with Judy Kaye recreating the role she originated off-Broadway and in the revival at the York Theatre Company. Mr. Marren is also the recipient of the Richard Rodgers production Award for his score for PORTRAIT OF JENNIE, based on Robert Nathan s novel. This work was also given its initial staged reading at the Eugene O Neill Theatre Center/National Music Theatre Conference and was produced at the Henry Street Settlement. Since 1986, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE has been produced in Tokyo several times and was selected The Best Musical of the Year by the Japanese publication, Musical. In the summer of 1987, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE was produced at the Berkshire Goodspeed Opera House and their Norma Terris Theatre gave Mr. Marren s musical version of Fannie Hurst s novel IMITATION OF LIFE (book & lyrics by Joe Masteroff) its world premier performances. BEYOND THE SEA is his musical version of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY (book and lyrics by Bruce Robinson). He has written two original musicals with Nan Knighton: OPEN HOUSE and SNAPSHOTS, which was given a staged reading by the Manhattan Theatre Club. Honored by the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his contribution to SESAME STREET, he was nominated for an individual Emmy for his work on the show during the 1996-97 season. For 10 years prior to writing for SESAME STREET, he was a regular contributor to CAPTAIN KANGAROO. Mr. Marren Holds both B.A. and M.A. degrees in theatre history from Tufts University and is listed in Who s Who in Entertainment.
